What do I need to know about Color, inks, and Paper?
COLOR
The color and appearance of ink will vary depending on the whiteness, brightness, color, texture, and absorbency of the paper being used. Coated and uncoated papers demonstrate the most common occurrence of this difference in appearance.
INK
The types of ink are numerous, but the most common inks are:
Process Inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. (CMYK)
PMS Inks: Variety of colors and tints.
Metallic Inks: Golds, Silvers, and Platinums.
Pastel Inks: A light, pale tint of a color.
Opaque Inks: Available in PMS Colors only.
Varnishes: Used as a coating or an effect.
Colortech’s Production Team can provide you with all the information you will need to make the right choice of ink for your project.
PAPER
Printing papers are available in a variety of Whites, Colors, Finishes, Weights, and Thicknesses. Paper is also available in synthetic materials. The end-use of the product should always be of prime concern when choosing a printing paper.
Paper is usually identified by its weight and finish. (50lb., 60lb., 80lb., etc.) The weight of the paper is further defined as cover weight or text weight. Paper is traditionally bought and sold by its weight. (Per ton or pound.)
Typical examples of coated finishes are Cast Coated, Gloss Coated, Matte, Dull, or Satin Coated. Examples of uncoated finishes are Smooth, Linen, Laid, etc. Uncoated paper can be further defined as texts, opaques, or bond.
Your Colortech Customer Service Representative, as well as the Estimating Services Department personnel can provide samples of all the printing papers available. They will advise you of the best choices to make when selecting a paper for your project.
